More than 20 years ago (dare I date myself?) I went to USC to begin my Master of Artificial Intelligence. I was preparing to re-create human behaviors in machines but instead the lectures were all about getting a vehicle from point A to point B in the most efficient manner. Ah, boring you might think (well, I did). Later I came to the realization, if it wasn’t for that research being done back then, you’d have a bunch of Ubers, Amazon vans, DoorDashers, and every-day drivers “thinking” they have the fastest way to get to their multiple destinations (you get the chaotic picture).
Fast-forward to today, the potential use cases for AI in Logistics and Transportation have basically exploded! And lately, every time I go to a Logistics conferences, I hear industry folks speak about AI. The problem is, most of the talk is so vague and not specific to our industry, it’s rather frustrating.
After a year of AI hype, I am still to learn about the best use of AI in Logistics. And that’s understandable - most of this is still new, and in Logistics and Transportation, we are a bit slow in adopting the latest buzz words and technology. So, I figured I’ll spend some time and really detail some of the most prominent AI-specific use cases. Of course, this is an opportunity for discussion so don’t be shy. If it’s any good, feel free to invite me to your next conference as a speaker. Or let me know of AI topics you may be interested in discussing.
Enjoy and Happy Discussions.
